Press ReleasesEvolution 27: The Big Comeback

Elite Boxing enjoyed another successful night in Malaysia on May 31 when it staged the eagerly anticipated re-launch of Evolution at a black tie gala event at the One World Hotel just outside Kuala Lumpur.

Having enjoyed over a decade of success as Australia’s number one muaythai event brand, Evolution was recently acquired by Elite Boxing as the latest addition to its already impressive portfolio. After 2 years of hard work and planning, Evolution finally made its long-awaited comeback last Saturday in an event that marked a number of firsts. In addition to being the first Evolution event organized by EB, it was also the first Evolution production to be held outside of Australia, where it enjoyed a decade of success.

Despite the brand’s winning formula, EB has also taken the bold step of remarketing Evolution as a global product targeted at a new market of VIP guests. The strategy is in line with EB’s ongoing efforts to improve the image of muaythai, and it appears to have paid off as last Saturday’s black tie gala event in One World Hotel’s Imperial Ballroom was attended by a sell-out crowd of 1,000 VIP guests, including International Songstress, Dato' Siti Nurhaliza together with husband, Datuk Seri Khalid, Renowned Malaysian Actress, Carmen Soo and supportive muaythai enthusiasts actresses, Izara Aishah with Tasha Shilaas well as government officials. Also in attendance was the Thai ambassador to Malaysia who addressed the crowd with a speech in which he expressed his pride that muaythai is appreciated by other countries and his gratitude to the organizers for supporting Thai heritage and the national sport of Thailand.

Since the acquisition of Evolution earlier this year, EB has been working behind the scenes assembling a strong organizing committee to ensure that the revamped Evolution continued the success it previously enjoyed in Australia. One of the original Evolution co-founders, Nugget McNaught, was responsible for the matchmaking and once again did a great job in arranging 7 closely matched international fights including 2 title bouts that kept the crowd entertained all night.

Nugget was also supported with the matchmaking by recently appointed Evolution co-promoter Leko Beh. The founder of the Dragon Muaythai Club, Malaysia’s number one gym, Leko is one of the key players in the muaythai scene in Malaysia and was able to provide valuable insights into the local fighters to ensure that all fights were evenly matched. As an official partner and representative of EB in Malaysia, Leko also handled the ticket sales at the sell-out event.

While EB flew in its own in-house crew from Bangkok to handle the production, Elite Boxing Malaysia local director Alex Phang was commended for securing the venue and for his PR work, which guaranteed the attendance of local celebrities and government officials.

Having also played important roles in the organizing committee, Vice President of the World Muaythai Council (WMC), Stephan Fox, and President of the Muaythai Association of Malaysia, Dato Shah, attended the event to offer their full support. After a very busy month in Malaysia, including the successful IFMA amateur championship in Langkawi between 1-10 May, the federation representatives can finally take a well-earned rest.

EB’s co-founders, Toli Makris and Seth Fishman, were delighted with how successful the event was after a lot of behind the scenes hard work. Seth was proud to finally announce the acquisition of Evolution, which he stated would help the company build a strong bridge between Asia and Australia.

Although the Australian muaythai market has been experiencing various difficulties over the last couple of years, EB is already in the progress of planning the next steps and putting a committee together with the aim of bringing Evolution back to Australia. The committee will include Mark the Hammer, who was an important part of Evolution from its beginning. Mark flew all the way in to support and commentate on Evolution 27: The Comeback, but he is set to take a more important role once again when he becomes the main contact person for promoters in Australia who will have the chance to incorporate Evolution qualifiers into their own events and give local fighters in Australia the chance to once again be part of Australia’s number one muaythai brand.
